Came across these two gems when working on #1888424: Unify Generator, url(), path aliasing, and url_outbound_alter. Had hoped to fix them up there but the changes ended up causing me more test failures, not fewer as I'd hoped, so breaking it off into a separate task.
Attached patch is just a start and only modifies http.php...
