Entity Reference fields and REST GET leads to "A fatal error occurred: Property entity is unknown"

I added an entity ref to Article content type and then created an article which has an entity ref to a User. The response I got was "A fatal error occurred: Property entity is unknown." Removing the Entity Ref field from the content type removes the error.
